India Clinch Win In Centurion; Suryakumar Heaps Praise for Tilak

India set a new record for the most 200-plus totals in a calendar year, posting their eighth such total in 2024 with 219/6 against South Africa.

India clinched an 11-run win in Centurion, taking a 2-1 lead over South Africa in the T20I series. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav, despite scoring just one run, praised the team’s resilience and highlighted Tilak Varma’s crucial performance, commending the young player’s fearless approach.

Yadav shared a personal insight into Varma’s determination, saying, "What can I say about Tilak Varma? He came to me in Gqeberha, asked if he could bat at three. I said to him it was his day and to enjoy himself. I knew what he was capable of doing, and I was very happy for him and his family.”

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav further lauded Varma’s performance, praising his courage and intent. "Very happy. What we spoke about in the team meetings, we played the brand of cricket that we wanted to play," Yadav said. Reflecting on how India’s young players are encouraged to play with intent, Yadav added, "That is what we have been telling them to do—similar to what they have been doing in the nets, for their franchises, and for their states. Even if they miss out in a few innings, they back their intent and their game.”

India set a new record for the most 200-plus totals in a calendar year, posting their eighth such total in 2024 with 219/6 against South Africa. Tilak Varma's brilliant unbeaten 107 off 56 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes, led the charge. Abhishek Sharma provided strong support with a rapid 50 off 25 balls, helping India to a commanding total.
