It was India's third-biggest win by runs away from home.
India, led by Jasprit Bumrah registered a brilliant comeback from being defeated 3-0 against New Zealand at home Test series and ruined Australia in their first of the five-Test series in Perth on Monday by 295 runs, already a day left for the end of the match.
Bumrah, visibly happy with his memorable debut as India’s captain said, “I am very happy. We were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded was great. I played here in 2018 - I remember the wicket started soft. This one was less spicy, we were really well prepared.”
He continued, “I told everyone to keep faith in your ability. Jaiswal's best Test innings so far, he left the ball well, I didn't see Virat out of form - difficult to judge that on difficult pitches. But he was good in the nets. We always enjoy the support from the crowd, when the backing is there we feel good.”
The result was expected even though Australia, fumbling with 12 for the loss of three wickets on Sunday at stumps, offered a counter-attacking fight through Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh on the fourth day. India's deserving victory became official just after tea when Harshit Rana knocked over Alex Carey as they drew first blood in the five-match series.
India had largely been written off after an unprecedented 3-0 home whitewash against New Zealand. They entered the series-opener without having played an official match on tour and were shorthanded without captain Rohit Sharma and injured batter Shubman Gill.
Under intense pressure, the team’s coach Gautam Gambhir made the right moves, and the brave selection calls, which included two-star spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja being excluded, were justified.
Bumrah especially deserves the credit for leading from the front and galvanizing a new-look team with a mesmerizing spell late on day one to haul India back into the match after they had been bundled out for 150 having won the toss. It was India's third-biggest win by runs away from home.
