India thrashes Japan 5-1 in men's hockey final, clinch Paris 2024 quota
Indian team led by Harmanpreet Singh hammered 2018 champions Japan 5-1 in the men's hockey final on Friday, October 6 and scripted history with the Gold medal.
India proved that the trajectory has only gone upwards in this game after the bronze in Tokyo Olympics with this stunning win.
The first quarter of the game remained goal less as Japan maintained it's strict defense strategy. In the second quarter however, Manpreet Singh made sure that India scored via a reverse strike and they headed into the half time with a 1-0 lead.
Japan was troubled in the third quarter and India had 3 penalty corners on the trot. Harmanpreet succeeded in the third attempt and gave India another spectacular goal. Amit Rohidas soon struck from a penalty corner and swiped a goal and it seemed that India will win with a clean sheet.
However, Japan's tenacity was obvious as midfielder Seren Tanaka pulled one back for their team after Abhishek's goal in the fourth quarter.
Harmanpreet in the end of the final quarter made a sensational penalty corner goal and clinched gold for India with 5-1 win.
This was India's 4th Gold medal at the Asian Games in men's hockey after 1966, 1998, and 2014.
Moreover, India also qualified for a place at next year's Paris Olympics as only the gold medal recipients in men's and women's hockey at the Asian Games can secure the Olympic berth.
