Joshua Vaz waits for the Futsal league like ISL

His biggest inspiration to continue with the shorter format of the game was his father Socorro Vaz.

Joshua Vaz, the only AFC Futsal licensed coach (Level-2) is waiting for the introduction of a Futsal League like ISL for the promotion of the game in India.

Vaz who himself was a professional footballer from Goa and also got trained at a Portuguese team Vitória de Guimarães, started playing Futsal in 2011.

His biggest inspiration to continue with the shorter format of the game was his father Socorro Vaz. Socorro was the first in the country to have acquired a Futsal Level-1 coaching degree in 2011 and he has been running a Futsal club La Masia and Youth Futsal Academy for the last 12 years where he is assisted by Joshua Vaz.

Joshua under whose guidance Mohamedan Sporting became runner-up in the Kolkata Futsal championship in 2022 has been the chosen the coach of the national Futsal team for the forthcoming AFC Cup Futsal qualifiers, to be held in Tajikistan from 7th to 11th October.

Indian Futsal team had only one preparatory tour against a strong Bahrain side in August playing two matches. Speaking over the phone from Amritsar where the national camp is going on, Vaz said, "Our preparation would have been better if we had the opportunity to participate in a few more preparatory matches against stronger teams like Bahrain. All three teams in our group, Tajikistan, Myanmar, and Palestine are strong teams. I am sure that the boys will not give up and fight till the end."

Commenting on the promotion of the game, the 33-year-old coach explained, "If the T-20 format turns out so popular then why not Futsal? It is also the shorter format of 90-minute football. A match takes 40 to 50 minutes to finish. The match comprises speed, a lot of goals, quickness, and ultimately the thrill. You will notice how Futsal has been extremely popular across the world and how Fifa is promoting the game."

Joshua also believes that a mainstream footballer always takes part in Futsal to polish his skill. He analyzed, "You need to have reflex, quick-decision making ability, technical supremacy with the ball especially to perform in Futsal format of the game. But a footballer who is accustomed to 90-minute games must be required to sharpen these ingredients to deliver his best. That is why, legendry footballers like Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta, and previously Ronaldinho-all are seen to participate in Futsal games often."

The scenario of Futsal in India changed a little after the national championship was organized by the AIFF after Coid19 pandemic for the first time where 14 state teams took part. Joshua sounded optimistic saying, "I believe within the next couple of years the AIFF will introduce Futsal League like ISL, inviting the corporate houses and the top foreign players who are the stars in Futsal format."
