The derby in Kolkata Premier Hockey league happened after 22 years and like many previous violence-marred incidents that happened in football derby ties, the derby in Kolkata Premier Hockey league between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan at the Mohammedan Sporting ground ended in hostility and violence between the supporters of both the clubs and finally spread between the officials of both the clubs who were present at the ground. Even three among the journalists who were covering the match were seriously injured. The viciousness started after Mohun Bagan took the lead. Mohun Bagan fans who were more than their opposition fans at the gallery started taunting and East Bengal fans did not stop, retorting to the opposition fans' mocking. It spread among the officials also who were sitting beside the fencing on the groundEast Bengal officials complained about the lack of proper security measures at the ground. Bengal Hockey Association (BHA) president Swapan Bannerjee defended stating, "We had already informed Police about the derby match. But it was their mistake not to depute enough police personnel at theground."The match was stopped for one-and-half hour due to the mess. Efforts were taken to resume the match without spectators. But Mohun Bagan secretary Debasish Dutta opposed saying, "We will not continue playing if our supporters are deprived of watching the match."
