United Sports have not been able to earn qualification for the elite I-League for the last 10 years.
United Sports Club is eyeing qualification for the elite I-League next season. United Sports Club is the country's one of the rare organizations from Bengal that can easily be called a 'manufacturer of footballers of the future'.
The club despite going through financial hardship for a long time has not stayed away from its mission of exploring and grooming the footballers of the future.
As a part of its reflection, the second team of United Sports Club, Mamoni & Ashiyana Patha Chakra has been performing consistently in the ongoing CFL Premier Division with four wins and a draw to place them in the sixth position so far.
The unsung hero is coach Lal Kamal Bhowmick, the former India international who once played for United SC and joined Patha Chakra as the coach two seasons ago.
But as United Sports have not been able to earn qualification for the last 10 years, the club's top brass including the Managing Director Nabab Bhattacharya has planned to put special attention on team building, and its extensive training before the Second Division I-League, scheduled to start from January next year.
In a bid to strengthen the team, Lal Kamal Bhowmick is likely to join the team’s chief coach Steve Herbots along with Anjan Nath who will basically build up a competitive team for the elite I-league qualifier.
Lal Kamal when asked about the plans, revealed, “Yes, I will join Steve in the team building program. Anjan Nath who has been with United United Sports since its inception will also be with us. I have played under many coaches including a few foreign coaches. With due respect to everybody I am saying, considering the training and playing style Steve is unique. Assisting him before the I-League-2 will improve me as a coach.”
In recent years, during their journey in the second Division I league, United SC failed to deliver their best despite the effort. The key factor was the financial crisis. The team had to travel to distant places for even two nights to participate in their away matches via train.
Due to a lack of sponsorship and proper financial assistance, the team could not travel by flight, and as a reflection, the footballers were exhausted while fighting against stronger teams. The team had to face another major problem that it did not obtain ample time for training before the important tournament.
Nabab Bhattacharya, commenting on the issue explained, “We will start training in November. The extensive training of two months before the League qualifier is expected to generate the performance as felt by the coaches.
Steve will guide the team with the assistance of Lal Kamal Bhowmick and Anjan Nath. The focus will be on local footballers but a few quality out-station footballers will also be needed."
When asked about the financial part, Bhattacharya said, "We will appeal to the state sports minister for some financial support. I will concentrate on accumulating funds and the coaches will be looking after the team."
