Harjinder was head coach of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) for around the last 22 years
Harjinder Singh, the left-footed marvel of Punjab football has started his third innings very recently. He has been working as the chief scout of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in India's age group football since October last year.
The former Indian international is happy that all the six footballers he scouted for the national under-17 team have also been acknowledged by the national under-17 chief coach Bibiano Fernandes and all of them are in the team that has been presently training with Atletico Madrid in Spain. They are expected to travel to Germany after Spain. Harjinder who was head coach of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) for around the last 22 years sounded extremely optimistic about the support he is getting from AIFF.
Speaking to Parallel Sports from Chandigarh, the 67-year–old former footballer said, "The AIFF is introducing under-15 leagues very soon across the country. Along with other scouts appointed by the AIFF from different regions, I will have to roam around to spot potential footballers as I did before scouting the under-17 boys. I also have plans to go to the States where football has not yet been popular but has potential footballers. The effort AIFF has taken through proper scouting will help the country to have quality footballers from all the states. I believe Indian football is not concentrated in the Northeast only. There are talents in the states like Assam, Rajasthan also. We have to watch their domestic leagues and scout only."
The former great forward donned India shirts from 1974 to 1983, playing in two Asian Games, winning the Asian Youth Championship in 1974, and featuring in the Asian All-Stars team. When asked whether he has found any talent who can be termed as the Harjinder of the future, said, "There are talents and presently a player can develop his skill with the help of technology also. So, one can expect the quality obviously. But regarding the naturally talented footballers, I can say they are scattered. They should be explored, scouted, and nurtured properly. Then only you can find another Surajit Sengupta in the future."
