Chelsea started their 29th game of the Premier League season in the 11th position. It is the latest they have started in the bottom half since 1995-96.
Chelsea and Liverpool were both left frustrated after a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday on home side’s first game since dismissal of Graham Potter
Chelsea, currently in the 11th position, had parted away with Graham Potter earlier this week after their 2 – 0 defeat against Aston Villa in their home match. Bruno Saltor is now their interim boss.
Liverpool, on the other hand, is in the eighth place in the league table. They faced a 4 – 1 defeat against Manchester City over the weekend and needed a bounce back.
In a head-to-head comparison Liverpool has a good history against Chelsea having won 84 out of 193 matches played between the two teams as against Chelsea’s 65th victory. Last five matches between these two teams ended in a draw while Liverpool has never played six consecutive draw against a single opponent in the top flight. Chelsea started their 29th game of the Premier League season in the 11th position. It is the latest they have started in the bottom half since 1995-96.
Chelsea under the interim boss Bruno Saltor was the better and dangerous team but failed to capitalize several goal opportunities. Liverpool had a new look line up with Klopp making six changes from the team which lost 4-1 against Manchester City. Mohammad Salah, Trent Alexander, Andy Robertson all were on the bench while Virgil van Dijk missed out due to illness.
Saltor made two changes from Potters’s lineup. Despite domination much of the 45 minutes of the first have Chelsea failed to convert the oppertnities.
Only in first-half stoppage time did Liverpool produce any meaningful threat on the Chelsea goal. Joe Gomez forced Kepa Arrizabalaga to turn a long-range effort behind and from the resulting corner Fabinho looked set to burst the net but Wesley Fofana got his head to the Brazilian's shot to take it off target.
The same story continued in the second half. Kovacic wasted another golden chance for Chelsea when he shot high over the bar after being played clean through. The hosts then had a second goal ruled out, though there could be no debate about the decision. Havertz’s shot straight at Alisson rebounded off a Chelsea attacker at the back of the net but the video assistant referee ruled it out as the ball came of Havertz’s arm.
