Preeti Pawar snatches bronze in women’s 54kg category
Lovlina Borgohain won over Thailand's Baison Manikon in the women's 75kg boxing semi-finals at Asian Games on Tuesday to secure a Paris Olympics berth. She became the fourth Indian boxer to secure an Olympic quota in Hangzhou in her division.
The Indian Olympic medallist, focused on her defense throughout the bout, and landed some effective counter-hooks to subdue her opponent and secured the anticipated spot for the gold medal match.
In Hangzhou games, India's Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda, and Lovlina Borgohain have successfully secured Paris 2024 quotas in their respective divisions.
Meanwhile, Preeti showcased her stunning skills and presence of mind to clinch bronze, losing 0-5 to reigning flyweight champion China's Chang Yuan in women's 54kg category in boxing at the Hangzhou Gymnasium.
The Chinese boxer began the match in a dominating manner and won the first round 4-1. However, Preeti made a strong comeback with soft punches and strong defensive capabilities to win the second round. In the decider her opponent took over an agressive Preeti and won the match.
Preeti is a decorated boxer with numerous accomplishments. Her father and uncle motivated her to take up the sport in which she was interested in.
She splendidly won silver and gold medals at the Khelo India Youth Games in 2020 and 2021 respectively, and got a silver medal at the Youth Asian Championships in 2021. Furthermore, Preeti not only earned a bronze medal in her first Asian Championships in 2022, but also reached the pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships.
