India's Parveen Hooda settles for bronze in women's 57kg event
Lovlina Borgohain clinched a Silver against China's Li Qian in the Women’s 75 kg Boxing final in the Hangzhou games.
Lovlina and her opponent proceeded in the opening bout with an equal footing. However, the Chinese boxer got the slight edge as the bout progressed, and she took away the opening round.
Lovlina was given a penalty warning (one-point deduction) in the first minute of the second round by the referee which chipped away at her confidence as she felt that her counterpart was at fault too. After the second round, four out of the five judges felt Qian was the more impressive while one felt both were equal which led the Chinese boxer to be way ahead of Lovlina.
Lovlina went for an all-out attack in the final match but Qian's defence was too strong. Despite her best efforts, Lovlina lost the bout and with that the gold medal by a unanimous decision. She got silver medal, India's first at the Asian Games in women's boxing.
Indian boxer Parveen Hooda won a significant bronze even though she lost to China's Lin Yu-Ting in a 5:0 defeat on points in the women's 57kg semi-final at the Hangzhou games.
Hooda, hailing from Rohtak, Haryana could not overcome the height disadvantage as it made it difficult for her to land scoring punches. Taking advantage of that her opponent jabbed Parveen with an array of punches while fighting from afar.
Parveen's aggressive approach in the second round was also nullified and though she did find success, it was not enough to convince the judges.
The 23-year-old Indian is not only the fourth to win bronze in this edition of Asian games in her discipline but also has successfully secured an Olympic quota for next year's Paris Games.
