RUFC has not participated in the country’s any major competition for last 10 years.
Eugeneson Lyngdoh, the former India international and the director of Rangdajied United FC (RUFC) believes the sudden opportunity to take part in the ongoing Durand Cup is a booster for Rangdajied United FC (RUFC).
The opportunity that came in the eleventh hour following the withdrawal of Hyderabad FC will energize RUFC to return to the mainstream of Indian football again according to Lyngdoh.
RUFC has not participated in the country’s any major competition for last 10 years. The team participated in the elite I-league last in 2013-14 and then was evicted from the I-league due to failure in fulfilling AFC club licensing criteria.
Then RUFC participated in the Third Division of I-league last season after winning their first-ever Meghalaya State League. But despite the fact that RUFC earned same points with Dempo SC, the team failed to qualify for the Second Division I-League based on goal average.
Lyndoh when asked about chances of RUFC’s return to the mainstream of Indian football, revealed while speaking over the phone, "It is a great opportunity for us. Although our footballers were on holiday and they will play in the Durand Cup with only two days' training, I am happy that the boys have obtained a platform where they can prove their mettle and this participation will encourage us to try to take part in the country’s other popular competitions also.”
RUFC will start their campaign in the Durand Cup on Monday, 5th August, against FC Goa.
Lyngdoh, also a former MLA from Mawphlang constituency divulged that RUFC has missed their participation in the Third Division I-League this season as the Meghalaya state football league was not conducted this season."
He continued, “We appealed to MFA to nominate us for the I-League Third Division. But they denied it also. We will try our best to participate in the I-League Third Division next season,” added Lyngdoh.
The team's Technical Director (TD), another former India international, Aibor Khongjee however divulged, "All of our footballers were on holidays. But they were asked to continue fitness training in their villages. We have to play in the tournament with only two days' preparation. Still, the boys looked excited to have the opportunity to participate in a prestigious competition like Durand Cup.”
