Mahavir Phogat wants a former international wrestler to come forward, and contest for the president's post in the upcoming election of the Wrestling Federation of India to take over the administrative power from the hands of corrupt Brij Bhushan Singh.
Phogat is not only the country's first Dronacharya in wrestling. He wrote a fairy tale about Indian wrestling, producing his four daughters who won several international laurels from Balali village where the girls were forced into underage marriages. It was Mahavir Phogat whose untiring effort ultimately changed the name of the village from Balali to the Phogat sisters' village.
One of Mahavir's students, the daughter of his brother Rajpal Phogat, Vinesh has been on a mission through the protest along with her teammates like Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, to uproot Brij Bhushan from his post. The eldest cousin sister of Vinesh, Geeta also complained of being harassed by the local police while supporting the grapplers.
Mahavir while speaking to Parallel Sports on Saturday from his academy in Balali angrily said, "I know Brij Bhushan for a long time. I know how much corrupt he is. I have heard that representatives from the World Wrestling body will be coming to India and organizing the election of United World Wrestling (UWW) is going to appoint an observer to conduct the WFI election. I want any former international wrestler to come forward and contest for the president's post. Unless former wrestlers get into administration, WFI will not change."
Mahavir who is also active with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Haryana branch lamented, "I feel ashamed of being with the same party where a man like Brij Bhushan Singh is associated. He would have resigned if Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah had asked him to do so."
The 65-year-old Dronacharya who mentioned on Friday that he even would return his medal if justice is not given to the wrestlers, revealed that he has found three highly potential students who have already started bringing international medals. Mahavir said, "There are Rajnita, Niya and Reena. All are now in the cadet group. Their average ages are 15. They have already won international medals. I am optimistic that after the golden batch of Geeta, Babita, Vinesh, Ritu and Sangita, these girls can come up with the same performance and stature at the senior level in the future."
