Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also sought justice for the 'daughter of the country'.
Mahavir Phogat, the uncle, mentor, and coach of Vinesh Phogat promised that looking forward to the 2028 Olympics he will prepare her in a way that will help Vinesh to win the desired gold.
Dronacharya wrestling coach, anguished after Vinesh was disqualified due to 50-gram overweight commented, “If a wrestler is 50-100 grams overweight he or she is generally allowed to play. I will ask the country's people not to despair. She will bring a medal for sure. I will prepare her for the next Olympics."
Mahavir simultaneously criticized the coaching staff traveling with Vinesh while speaking to PTI. He stated, “What has happened is disheartening, the entire country was expecting a Gold medal from her. It was the responsibility of the coach to ensure that her weight stayed in control.”
He continued, "Only the coach and the doctors can answer what led to the increase in her weight. It was their responsibility. Her weight was under control yesterday but it increased and that too by 100 grams today."
Meanwhile, Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday said the Indian Olympic Association had registered a strong protest with the United World Wrestling against Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics after she was found overweight ahead of her gold medal match. Mandaviya revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to make a strong protest against the disqualification.
Significantly, Vinesh Phogat's disqualification at the Paris Olympics has sparked a huge outrage back home, with opposition leaders calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also sought justice for the 'daughter of the country'.
“It is unfortunate that Vinesh Phogat, India's pride, who reached the finals after defeating world champion wrestlers, was disqualified on technical grounds. We have full hope that the Indian Olympic Association will strongly challenge this decision and provide justice to the daughter of the country,” Gandhi posted on X in Hindi.
However, the global body for wrestling, United World Wrestling's (UWW) chief Nenad Lalovic, said nothing could be done about Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics.
UWW chief Lalovic, however, doused all hopes. “I have nothing against that (India's appeal) but I know the outcome,” he told Indian reporters in Paris. “I do not see anything that can be done. It is the competition's rules and I really do not think it is possible (to overturn the decision)," he added.
India’s cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also has posted a message of consolation and heaped praise for Nisha Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat’s magnificent performance in the competition. He has written, ‘Nisha Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat, your courage and determination have inspired the entire nation. Nisha. Fighting through injury with such a spirit was truly remarkable. Vinesh, despite the heartbreak of disqualification your incredible journey to the finals and victory against Yui Susaki have earned our deepest admiration.’
