Manchester United has 'Possibility' to Face Relegation after 50 Years; Amorim Acknowledges his 'Fault'

While relegation remains a possibility, turning the season around will likely require significant reinforcements during the January transfer window. However, Manchester United faces financial constraints after reporting a loss of £113.2 million.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim delivered a sobering reality check on Monday, acknowledging the possibility of relegation in a season that has spiralled far from expectations.

When the question arose if the club could be drawn into a battle for survival, Amorim stated, “I think that it is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans.”

Addressing the media later, he admitted responsibility for the team's struggles. “It is also my fault. The team is not improving. It is a little bit lost in this moment, and it is a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games," he said.

Following the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle, Man United stayed at 14th in the table at the end of 2024, marking one of the most difficult periods in the club's history.

“That is really clear, so we have to fight," said the coach. "It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United, and we have to address it with honesty. We have to fight in the next game.”

Calling for drastic change, he added, "I think people are tired of excuses at this club. This club needs a shock.”

While relegation remains a possibility, turning the season around will likely require significant reinforcements during the January transfer window. However, Manchester United faces financial constraints after reporting a loss of £113.2 million in the financial year ending June 2024.

Amorim acknowledged the challenge, saying, "We don't have that possibility in January if we don't take some players [out]. You know the situation better than me." He further clarified, "It is not that I am arriving here and know I can spend money changing the team.”
