Mariners secure historic double with a thrilling win against BFC

Jamie Maclaren struck the winner in the 96th minute, encouraging 59 thousand roaring MBSG fans to complete their celebration.

Mohun Bagan Super Giants (MBSG) completed their historic double, winning the ISL Cup after winning the ISL Shield with a thrilling 2-1 victory against Bengaluru FC (BFC) at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

Jamie Maclaren struck the winner in the 96th minute, encouraging 59 thousand roaring MBSG fans to complete their celebration. A Greg Stewart forward through was invented by a BFC defender inside the box but Jamie, swooping down like a hawk snatched the ball and jabbed home through custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s legs.

Earlier, BFC obtained the lead in the 49th minute when Alberto Rodriguez, trying to block a Ryan Williams cross, scored the suicidal goal. 

Jason Cummings brought the equalizer for MBSG in the 72nd minute after his team were awarded a spot-kick following Sana’s handling the Maclaren shot. 

Considering the ball possession BFC were ahead of their Saturday's opposition with 62 percent MBSG had only 38 percent possession in the match. But BFC failed to penetrate the opposition's defense. 

Sunil Chhetri looked almost out of the form. They were only near-perfect in defensive organization and MBSG had to struggle to crack their defensive solidity. Hose Molina's decision to field Ashique Kuruniyan in the last stage of the regulation time that ended 1-1. 

Ryan Williams was the only BFA footballer who could create some impact on MBSG defense by posing threat whenever he was moving up.
