An emergent meeting between the Durand Cup organizers and the city’s administration has been called up on Saturday afternoon before deciding the future of Sunday’s Kolkata derby.
Mohun Bagan Super Giants (MBSG) will be getting an opportunity to take part in one of their AFC Champions League Tier-2 group matches at the 'Asia's wonder' stadium Al Janoub in Qatar. MBSG will play their away match against Qatar side Al Wakrah SC on 6th November this year.
Al Janoub, an award-winning stadium is 22 km away from Doha. The stadium is shaped like the sails of traditional pearl diver Dhow boats, with the seating stands on the inside designed like the waves of the sea.
With a capacity of 44 thousand, the stadium costed 576 million US Dollars and was inaugurated during the Amir Cup final in May 2019. Al Janoub Stadium was awarded a Class-A sustainability rating by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). Its proprietary cooling technology efficiently uses energy to cool the stadium, making it usable throughout the year.
However, MBSG will start their campaign in the ACL-2 on 18th September against FC Ravshan. They will play their home- match against Al Wakrah on 23rd October.
However, questions have come up over the staging of the scheduled Kolkata 'derby' between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the ongoing Durand Cup on Sunday at Salt Lake Stadium.
