Meghalaya to develop sports infrastructure, residential football school

This ‘mission mode’ from the government is a big push for the athletes, 11 athletes were selected among 50000 and trained under Australian Olympian Ian Campell and others.

Meghalaya won't only be known for tourism but also as a sports hotspot. Meghalaya government is taking active initiatives to set up sports infrastructure. They made the statement further clear when the promise to set up a football academy ended up with sending state athletes to the Paris Olympics. 

Conrad K Sangma’s project of developing a sports city is still an ongoing process. The Meghalaya CM already had a meeting with PM Modi and sought financial assistance of Rs.1,000 crore because of this project. 

"The development of New Shillong is very much part of the agenda of our government. We have started the Meghalaya Games a few years back and through this, our intention is to reach the top level.” stated Meghalaya's deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong. 

The deputy chief minister further stated to TOI -“The creation of infrastructure keeps happening and we would like to see in the next few years proper infra not only at the district level, but it should happen up to the block level. The government is certain that the transformation of the youth mentally and physically will happen in the state soon," 

He disclosed that the state government is in a ‘special mission mode’ which includes hosting national games, and football tournaments like the Durand Cup also giving the players the nurturing they need to represent India at international levels like the Olympics. 

The government collaborated with Indian Super League side NorthEast United FC to establish a residential football center in the vicinity of Shillong.
