Messi's exit may affect PSG's finance

Ligue earns 80 million euros annually from outside sales.

Lionel Messi is set to leave PSG at the end of this season. He has been suspended for two weeks following an unauthorized tour to Saudi Arabia. The Ligue 1club is not planning to extend the contract with the forward.

The possible departure of Messi may have several financial repercussions. According to sports marketing experts consulted by EFE (via MARCA) there may be a fall of 10 percent in international TV rights and also a drop of 10 percent in shirt sales. Ligue 1 will have to renegotiate international rights at a lower rate. This will not only affect PSG but other top clubs will also be affected.

The current contract with Bein Sports of Qatar expires in 2024 and Ligue earns 80 million euros annually from outside sales which is very low compared to the Premier League clubs which earn an average of 2 billion euros. This earning of the club may shoot down if the Argentine legend exits.

Virgile Caillet and Vincent Chaudel, two top marketing experts in France have agreed that international rights may be influenced by Messi's decision. Another part which may affect is a downfall of 10 percent of the short sales, although this will not have any direct impact on the club's finance.

Messi by his presence attracted new sorcerers and boosted PSG T-shirt sales. The income against these crossed millions in 2022. Of course, the positive side is the club may send a strong message about its discipline and stances. Caillet explained that his departure may reduce the wage bill and help in getting closer to the FFP rules.

However, Argentine International and Messi's teammate Javier Mascherano have criticized the behavior of PSG fans toward Messi. According to him, PSG has not given the real value of the legend. He added, "The club has not seen such a superstar before Messi. They will regret their actions within 10 years after Messi's exit."

Former Brazilian International, Rivaldo, has other views. He said, "Messi could have simply taken the matter. He should have waited for the club's decision before deciding to exit." According to him, Messi has broken the rules of the club.
