The EMS program will initially be implemented as a pilot project in 2-3 selected districts before being expanded statewide.
Looking forward to India’s performance in the 2036 Olympics, Mizoram has set the example, being the first state in India to have taken a positive initiative to produce Indian internationals from the state by nurturing and grooming potential young boys and girls. In a bid to produce India internationals from Mizoram in different disciplines, the government introduced a special scheme, named Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) and allotted Rs 2.5 crores under the scheme for an extensive talent-hunt program throughout the state.
Significantly, the Indian Olympic Association has already submitted the bid to host the 2036 Olympics in the country.
Pu Lalduhoma, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, launching the ‘Empowering Mizoram Sports’ (EMS) program under the Mizoram ‘Bana Kaih’ Scheme on Monday stated, “With India preparing to host the 2036 Olympics we see a significant opportunity for Mizo athletes. Our vision is to groom young talents now to represent India in the 2036 Olympics. To achieve this, the Empowering Mizoram Sports program has been launched with a Rs 2.5 crore budget under the Bana Kaih scheme.”
The Empowering Mizoram Sports initiative aims to establish sports coaching and talent development programs across Mizoram. As part of this program, basic coaching will be provided to children aged 8 to 15, focusing on preparing them for future competitions, particularly the 2036 Olympics.
The EMS program will initially be implemented as a pilot project in 2-3 selected districts before being expanded statewide.
Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State, Sports & Youth Services Department emphasized, "The EMS program aims to identify and nurture talent from even the remotest villages. However, it is not merely about providing training; the communities must express a desire for coaching. They will also be responsible for logistical needs, food, and accommodations. This initiative is about fostering a genuine sense of ownership and commitment."

When asked about the issue by Parallel Sports, Hmar explained, "We have also planned to seek the help of other states, where experienced and skilled coaches for different respective disciplines can come and train our potential players. The short-listed athletes will be divided into three tiers, where the top-tier athletes from all disciplines will be under the same roof for an advanced training program."
He added, “We should not sit idle, depend on the central government’s assistance. We should take the initiative on our own. We are determined to see Mizo youth, both men and women, compete at the highest level on the global stage.”
