Mohammedan Sporting creates history by fielding first-ever girls football, team, desires to participate in IWL

Mohammedan Sporting created history silently. Coming out of its century-old tradition the club fielded its first-ever girls' football team in the recently-held Kolkata women's football tournament Kanyasree Cup. The team which had three Under-17 girls World Cupper lost to East Bengal in the semifinal.

The initiative was by the club executive committee members in 2021. Still, it was not easy for the club officials to make the application of their initiative initially. Muslim community which is generally dominant in running Mohammedan Sporting Club did not give the nod initially for the building of girls' cricket and football teams. The club officials spread their intention among their community to receive a positive response.

Cub secretary Danish Iqbal speaking to Parallel Sports said, "Asian Football Confederation (AFC) sent a letter on 3rd March last year that asked to celebrate Women's Day and that letter clicked. We organized an exhibition girls' football match at our ground where two outside teams participated and significantly, nearly five thousand spectators came to watch the match. Even I saw women wearing borkhas were present at our ground to watch the match. We were inspired and initiated to build up a women's cricket team for an invitational T-20 tournament. The team that won the competition had a couple of women cricketers from our community. Buoyed by the cricket team's success we were willing to start women's football and the offer to take part in Kanyasree Cup came to us as a blessing."

Belal Ahmed, club's one of the executive committee members added, "It was the club secretariat and president's progressiveness and initiative to start women's football. We did not get enough time to build up the team this year. Still, we were able to form a formidable squad where promising footballers from the North-East, footballers from districts, and following the tournament rule we roped in four footballers from other states. The three of them were from Orissa and they had represented the country in the Under-17 Women's World Cup."

Danish asserted also saying that there were a couple of promising women footballers from the Muslim community during their preparation for the Kanyasree Cup. He stated, "We are happy to see that the guardians of young Muslim girls are also shrugging off traditional mending gradually and allowing their daughters to come out and play. However, we do not have such prejudice, and players from all communities are welcome to join our team."

Belal also added, "The main reason behind the loss to East Bengal in the semi-final was our three Under-17 World Cuppers' departure after they were called in the national preparatory camp for Under-20 SAFF football championship. Besides, as we did not get enough time for preparation, I feel the performance was satisfactory."

Mohammedan Sporting wants to nurture girls' football in a professional manner in near future. Danish divulged that within the next couple of months, they will take initiative to start a youth development program with the girls' footballers by setting up a professional training center. Simultaneously, Danish revealed, "We aim to field a team in the Indian Women's League (IWL)."
