Mohammedan Sporting salvage pride in a 2-2 thriller at Kalyani Stadium

Mohun Bagan advanced closer to the Super-Six stage with 24 points from 11 matches so far.

Mohammedan Sporting salvaged pride through a Sheikh Faiaz excellent header in the 96th minute in the team’s first derby against Mohun Bagan at Kalyani Stadium on Thursday.

Faiaz's header unleashed off a Mohammed Irshad floater from the right at a time when the Black Panthers were trailing 1-2 and the demoralized fans were all set to leave the stadium.

Faiaz helped the Black Panthers to finish their CFL Premier Division group league engagement at 29 points in 12 matches while the green-and-maroon brigade, desperately needed points to ensure a berth in the Super-Six stage of the Premier Division, advanced closer to the Super-Six stage with 24 points from 11 matches so far.

Mohammedan Sporting took the lead in the 20th minute through Lalremsanga courtesy of Bagan's goalkeeper Zahid's failure to grip Lalremsanga's grounded cross from the right.

Kiyan Nasiri, the son of Jamshid Nasiri who was chosen man-of-the-match, helped Mohun Bagan to come back into the match in the 58th minute, executing an out-stepped push from the far corner of the box after controlling the floater superbly. Taison Singh gave Bagan a desirable lead in the 80th minute through a brilliant left-footed shot from outside the box before Faiaz equalized the score-line in the dying minutes.

Both the teams demonstrated an attacking brand of football. Both the teams' passing and trying to gain a numerical advantage in the penetrative zone were impressive. The result was also clear as both the teams created chances before squandering it. Still, Mohammedan Sporting was deprived of another goal when one header from inside the box rebounded off the post in the second half.

Pranjal Banerjee, the country's one of the leading referees right now conducted the match as usual with precision. He made the only mistake by cautioning Kiyan for play-acting in the 25th minute but Zudhika, the Mohammedan Sporting defender pulled off Kiyan’s jersey just outside the box, forcing him to get down inside thanks to InSport TV for bringing the exact moment to the spectators.
