National champion Rishaan achieves a rare feat, gets inspiration from Rafael Nadal

Rishaan's parents have already appointed a motivator, a yoga teacher so that Rishaan does not lose focus.

He is only 10 years old, a student of fifth standard, and possesses some special characteristics that reflect the sign of being a prodigy in near future. Rishaan Chattopadhyay has already achieved a rare feat within only five years of his table tennis journey. In the under-11 category, this exceptional paddler from Bengal has been the only player across who has never lost before the last-four stage in the 19 ranking tournaments he has played including two national ranking zonal tournaments as well as the national championship. He has drawn additional attention from the table tennis fraternity after being the national champion last year in the under-11 category as well as the state champion to place himself as the country's number one ranked paddler and the number one ranked in the state in his category.

Rishaan's coach Debabrata Chakraborty while commenting on his student explained one of his special characteristics, "Rishaan is extremely spontaneous, enthusiastic, and precisely instinctive. I never try to obstruct or change his attitude and it reflects in his game. Even in a difficult situation when he trails, Rishaan can deliver exceptional shots and come back. He has shown it many times. His tremendous passion and instinct always drive him to offer exceptional shots at any time."

Significantly, Rishaan while talking revealed that other than table tennis he likes watching tennis and Rafael Nadal is his favorite. He said, "Nadal's accuracy on the court and fighting spirit touches me. In the national championship, I was in a situation while playing in the pre-quarterfinal stage. I was almost losing the decisive game but finally came back. I feel Nadal's fighting spirit has silently induced in my mind also."

However, Rishaan's parents, Debarghya and Tinni Chattopadhyay also deserve credit for their son's consistency. Having watched Rishaan's passion and spontaneity, his parents have already appointed a motivator, a yoga teacher so that Rishaan does not lose focus. Debargya described, "I have a table tennis board and a few other modern pieces of equipment at home so that Rishaan can keep on training if he cannot go to the club." Debarghya also revealed another special character of Rishaan saying, "He generally does not play the game that he practices. He becomes more instinctive, and improvises while playing even a crucial match."

Debarghya also mentioned Rishaan has a concentration problem. But Rishaan mentioned an incident that showed his concentration level should not be ignored. He said, "I lost to Vir Balmiki in the under-13 category in Vadodara national zonal championship. I failed to combat his loop top spins. Before my next national zonal championship scheduled to be held in Surat within a week, I returned home for three days, practicing to reply to the loop top spins incessantly under the observation of my sir Debabrata Chakrabarty and then outsmarted Balmiki in Surat. That has been my most memorable match so far."
