New York to host cricket in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?

Los Angeles, the host does not have an international cricket stadium. There are just four stadiums in the USA, three of which are in Texas and one in Florida.

Casey Wasserman, the head of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, seems still in doubt about the venue of cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics. The Los Angeles Olympics is still far away, scheduled to kick off on the 14th in 2028. But planning should not be stopped, and it has not.

Wasserman is very aware that being ‘ready’ for staging cricket is not easy. Preparing a cricket stadium takes months. Ensuring a perfect pitch and outfield that is safe for the fielders cannot be easy.

However, Los Angeles, the host does not have an international cricket stadium. There are just four stadiums in the USA, three of which are in Texas and one in Florida.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had previously talked about grabbing hold of the Indian market. For the 2021-24 cycle, the IOC made a meager $12 million (Rs 100 crore) from media. Considering the population of India is 1.45 billion (145 crore), that is peanuts. The introduction of cricket in the Olympics is expected to increase to $201-268 million (Rs 1689-2253 crore). That is the key reason cricket was reintroduced after 128 years.

Wasserman realizes that he needs to cater to the Indian audience. So, although the hosts are in Los Angeles, we might see the venue be New York for the matches. The time zone is the factor. When cricket matches in India started at 10:30 AM in New York it was 8 PM in India during the T-20 World Cup.

Along with New York, Florida could be another option due to a similar time difference as New York, but rain reigned supreme there during the World Cup and if that happens during the Olympics, it will add more anxiety to Wasserman.
