Nitu became the sixth Indian boxer to be crowned World Champion with a devastating 5-0 victory over Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altansetseg.

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas scripted history in the World Championship on Saturday. In the 48kg category, she became the sixth Indian boxer to be crowned World Champion with a devastating 5-0 victory over Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altansetseg in the World Championship final, being held in New Delhi.

Along with the trophy, the 23-year-old girl had another gift when the first Olympian Indian boxer Vijender Singh rushed to Delhi on the day from Mumbai only to watch Nitu's bouts and after her crowning glory, Vijender heartily wished her saying, "The journey has begun. Paris Olympics next year. Do not lose your focus. You can be a medal contender."

Speaking to Parallel Sports from New Delhi, the bronze medalist in Bejing Olympics and the first Indian professional boxer said, "I was in Mumbai, busy with my second Bollywood movie starring Salman Khan. I came to Delhi mainly to watch Nitu's fight. She was simply amazing. The most interesting part of her boxing I noticed was her coolness, maturity, and concentration level. Besides, she is humble and that is why she can be a good student to improve more."

Significantly, Nitu is a student of the renowned BBC (Bhiwani Boxing Club) in Haryana and her teacher is also Dronacharya Jagdish Singh who has produced several international boxers including Vijender Singh.

The gold medalist in Europe's oldest boxing competition, Strandja Memorial in 2022 must be dedicating the World Champion's trophy to her parents who made a great sacrifice for their eldest daughter at a time when the people around them in Dhanana village were criticizing them for inspiring Nitu in boxing. Nitu once said, "Those people come to our home now with sweets, wishing my success. I am happy to have become an inspiration to other girls in my village as their parents are sending them to learn boxing."

However, Vijender revealed that he might take part in two professional bouts this year and one out of the two might even take place in Kolkata. He has started training. He also informed, "I am likely to go to Dubai to train under British coach Lee Beard."
