‘No financial support, fear of violence; Manipur must have to win today,’ says coach Itocha

Manipur women’s football team which holds a record 21-time senior national championship titles, will face Haryana in the final this year to be held today, on 15th May at the Kishore Bharati Stadium.

Their preparatory camp could not start in time. The reason was the fiery ethnic violence, going on across the state for the last seven months.

Several footballers including the team’s coach Itocha Singh whose homes are at the border area were delayed in joining the training at the Khuman Lampak stadium in Imphal. The reason was the violence was more intense across the border area of the state.

Even, Manipur women’s football team did not have any financial support. The state football association organized the team’s air ticket. IFA, the local organizer of the senior national championship has provided lodging and food.

Still, the team had to face a lot of difficulties during their training period. Coach Itocha Singh said, "We had to buy medicines, fruits, and required supplements for the footballers. We did not have financial assistance from any corporate house as everything is closed across the state. State football association and a group of my friends collected money and gave us. We are grateful for their sacrifice and we must have to win the title for them today.
