The 70-year-old Jayanta Chakraborty has progressed, gradually passing through all the transition phases of media platforms as a sports journalist.
He is Kolkata's one of renowned sports journalists. Not only that, he is a rare person in the field of Kolkata's sports journalists who has experience working in all mediums. He started working in the newspaper in the 70s. With a vast working experience of 31 years in the print media, he shifted to the television medium, working with Kolkata's premier TV channels and presently he has joined the digital platform.
The 70-year-old Jayanta Chakraborty has progressed, gradually passing through all the transition phases of media platforms as a sports journalist. On the 'World Sports Journalist Day' his advice towards present-day sports journalists is to do more hard work, especially, to develop more 'leg work' rather than depending on mobile phone-oriented information.
Chakrabarty said, "The sports journalists of the present-day generation are very much aware of news, incidents all around. Still, my observation says they have become too dependent on cell phone-oriented information and that is one of the reasons behind the decline of quality."
He added, "I still relish my time with newspapers. I still feel print media is the place where one has the opportunity to research, explore and investigate before writing an article. Television and digital media will not give you that scope. The impact of the news or a story is instant, not long-lasting. But you have to cope with the change if you wish to sustain."
Commenting on the quality of today's sports journalism, Chakrabarty said he sometimes feels sorry while watching untruth news being delivered to the people through media. He cited an example on the issue, saying, "I was a student of legendary Ajay Bose who was the sports editor of Jugantar Patrika for a long time. One evening we got the news that Gautam Sarkar (footballer) has died. If it happened today, many sports journalists will publish it without checking its authenticity. But I still can remember, Ajay Bose went to Gautam's house on the day and confirmed that the news was false."
Commenting on the hard work, Chakraborty cited another example telling, "IFA secretary Late Pradyut Dutta mortgaged IFA building to a bank to organize Nehru Cup. I walked through the full Dalhousie and Esplanade area, knocking on the different branches of different banks to confirm the news before writing it."
He asserted, "Not only me, but all my contemporary sports journalists who worked with different newspapers at that time also followed that traditional method of journalism where you need to think, research, and explore finally. This style of journalism is hardly seen nowadays."
Chakraborty, however, feels the status of sports journalists overall has upgraded considering the 70s and 80s when sports journalists were called 'grass journalists'. "But the scenario has changed a lot in the last three to four decades. It is the responsibility of the sports journalists to maintain their prestige by doing sports journalism with integrity and honesty," concluded the veteran sports journalist.
