No male wrestlers have earned any Olympic berths in either freestyle or Greco-Roman.
The four women wrestlers who have gained Olympic quotas for India so far will have to clear one final obstacle before confirming their seats on the Paris-bound airplane. Sanjay Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), said that a selection trial will take place in June. The victors in each category will represent their country at the Paris Games, which start on July 26. So far, Antim Panghal (53 kg), Vinesh Phogat (50 kg), Anshu Malik (57 kg), and Reetika Hooda (76 kg) have secured quota slots for India. Wherever no male wrestlers have earned any Olympic berths in either freestyle or Greco-Roman.
Singh stated that the trials will examine the wrestlers' 'present form' rather than their reputation. "The selection committee has recommended that trials should be held. There will be four wrestlers in each category. The trials will be held as per our policy wherein each wrestler will face each other rather than the quota-winner meeting the challenger directly in the final" Singh stated.
Sanjay Sing added that the last Olympic qualification event, which culminates on May 12 in Istanbul, will determine the dates and ultimate format. That event will be the penultimate opportunity for Indian male wrestlers to gain a quota. While the level of competition is expected to be higher at the World qualifications than at the recent Asian event, the additional quota slot available will increase wrestlers' chances of securing a spot. According to United World Wrestling (UWW), "every weight category offers three Paris Olympic spots—one each to the two finalists and one to the winner of the playoff between the two bronze medalists."
