Opportunity for Jay Shah to become youngest ICC Chairman

Notably, an ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years and this is Barclays' second two-year term.

Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah will have a great opportunity to become the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) if he shows interest.

Such a situation is developing as Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman, has opted out of a third term after the end of his ongoing stint with the world cricket governing body on 30th November.

That leaves the possibility of Jay Shah becoming the next ICC chairman open but it remains to be seen if the current BCCI secretary expresses a desire at all to get involved in the chairman election. It will be confirmed by 27th August.

Notably, an ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years and this is Barclays' second two-year term.

"ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022," an official release by the ICC quoted him as saying.

The ICC rules state that the chairman's election usually has 16 votes. To decide the winner, a majority of nine votes (51%) is needed. Earlier, the requirement for the incumbent to remain chairman was the two-third majority.
