Legendary coach late Amal Dutta once took part in a protest rally and meeting in 2007, supporting our move against the forcible possession of the ground.
Shyamnagar ground has a history. The second oldest football tournament in Bengal, Girija Prasanna Memorial Shield used to take place on this ground. The radio commentary of a football match had started from this ground. All the legendary footballers of Bengal had played on this ground.
The local businessmen have tried to buy this ground several times. The residents including the football-passionate people like Nabab Bhattacharya who are directly associated with the game have been trying to save this ground for a long time, organizing protest rallies and meetings. Even Legendary coach late Amal Dutta once took part in a protest rally and meeting in 2007, supporting our move against the forcible possession of the ground.
In a bid to keep this historical ground always busy with football, an initiative from Nabab Bhattacharya and others Shyamnagar Festival was introduced and this is the third year. Defending champion Baidyabati BS Park and Garifa United Club will play the final on Sunday. The champion will receive Rs 75 thousand while the runner-up will be given Rs 50 thousand.
Bhattacharya said, "Our main aim is to make a stadium at this ground. We have been in that process for a long time. Even today, efforts are on to sell this ground to business men. But we have stopped it, made an appeal to the District Magistrate and even to the state government requesting them to preserve one of the cradles in Bengal football. I am hopeful that our efforts will not go in vain."
