Paimantee wins maiden senior national title, remembers Abhishek sir, Anindita madam

Incidentally, Ankur Bhattacharya acquired bronze in the men’s singles losing to G.S Sathiyan, and a silver medal in the men's doubles events.

Paimantee Baishya did not sound ecstatic although she did not hesitate to express her happiness after clinching the maiden women's singles title in the senior national championship held in Panchkula.

She did not mention the extreme level of tiredness she had to go through to be compelled to take part in around 10 matches on the day. The 21-year-old also won women's doubles and became runners-up in the mixed doubles.

Paimantee rather remembered her coaches' contribution to the success explaining, "I am grateful to the continuous encouragement my parents made and the coaches, Anindita Chakrabarty and Abhishek Mukherjee for the achievement. Anindita Madam was my first coach. I learned all the basics, and the style from her. She taught me with such an integrity that Abhishek sir did not have much difficulty to develop my skill and temperament on the foundation.”

Anindita Chakrabarty sounded happy also with the maiden title of her student exclaiming, “She was confident and almost flawless. But I told her that this is the beginning. She has to go a long way.”

Mouma Das also had the same opinion stating, “Paimantee is potential. If she can continue hard work then she can bring laurels from international competitions also."

Paimantee who resides in Hind Motor in Hooghly district even did not express much elation for having stunned current Arjuna Awardee, Indian international paddler Ayhika Mukherjee in the final. The employee at Metro Railways added, “I defeated her before also.”

Paimantee is expecting growth in her senior national ranking from the 9th spot to within the top five spots. She added, "I will have to carry on the same performance, especially in the WTT Contender international competition scheduled to be held in January in Goa. My ultimate dream is to wear Indian shirts."

However, questions arose over the hectic schedule of the matches in the senior national championships. The paddlers who reached the last-eight stage in different events in both men's and women's categories had to take part in four to five matches a day. Even the participants and their coaches are not getting confirmed tickets to return to their respective states. The paddlers who won medals in the national championship are not even looked after by either the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) or their respective state table tennis associations so that the paddlers' return tickets get confirmed and they can return without any exhaustion.
