Rizwan, Shafique help Pakistan pull off highest successful chase in World Cup history
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat and made a record score of 344 runs. Pakistan reached the target and beat Sri Lanka by six wickets at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Pakistan had a shaky start as opener Imam-ul-Haq fell early, as did captain Babar Azam. Then Mohammed Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique steadied the proceedings for Pakistan. Opener, Shafique scored 113 runs on his World Cup debut and keeper-batter Rizwan fought cramps and ended it unbeaten on 131. This was the highest-ever successful chase in the history of World Cups.
Sri Lanka posted a massive 344/9 on the back of centuries from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Mendis swung 14 fours and six sixes to make 122 off 77 balls and was involved in two century partnerships with Pathum Nissanka and Samarawickrama. Hasan Ali swiped 4 wickets and Haris Rauf took 2 in the last over and made sure Sri Lanka is not able to make a 350-plus total.
