In a remarkable comeback after a devastating car accident in December 2022, Pant top-scored with a blistering 53 off 32 balls, featuring four sixes and as many fours.
Pant's comeback innings was a masterclass in power hitting and ingenuity. Highlights included a one-handed six over long-on and a no-look flick to backward square leg for a boundary, both signature Pant shots. His performance overshadowed a shaky start by India, where Sanju Samson, opening the batting, managed only one run. Pant's steadying partnership of 48 runs with Rohit Sharma (23 off 18) on a sluggish track laid the foundation for India's total.
Pant wrote on Twitter, ‘Amazing feeling to be out on the ground wearing blue’.
Rohit Sharma's post-match comments hinted at Pant's significant role in India's World Cup plans, especially with the number 3 spot open due to Virat Kohli's absence in the warm-up match. According to Hindustan times Rohit revealed, "Just to give him an opportunity. We haven’t nailed the batting line-up yet, we wanted most guys to get a hit in the middle".
In an interaction with Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “Yes, I think simply because if you compare the wicketkeeping abilities then Rishabh Pant is a better wicketkeeper than Samson. We’re not talking about batting here, the batting aspect also comes into play. But, Rishabh Pant in the last few matches has batted really well.hitting the ball to all corners of the ground,"
After recovering from the severe injuries sustained in his car accident, Pant made his return to competitive cricket in IPL 2024, scoring 287 runs for Delhi Capitals at a strike rate of 155. His form carried over into the international arena, providing India with a crucial boost ahead of the World Cup.
