Pintu, Gautam, and Surajit still come in the dream of Mohon who once played with Gavaskar

He was a good cricketer too. He represented the Indian School team with Sunil Gavaskar, Eknath Solkar, and Amarnath brothers and even played two Tests.

He is Mohon Singh. From the mid-60s, the right foot of this midfielder made the spectators spellbound. He started his football career in 1967 representing the Aryans Club. In 1968 he played for BNR. He was recruited to play for East Bengal in 1972. He, paired with Gautam Sarkar, had a dream season winning the triple-crown. In 1973 and 1974 he played for Mohun Bagan and returned to his previous club in 1975. In 1976 he signed for Mohammedan Sporting but failed to deliver an impressive show. Although Bhtratri Sangha offered him to play for them in 1977, Mohon Singh gave up football and played first-division cricket for two years.

Mohon Singh was born in the year 1947 in Punjab but settled in Kolkata with his family members as his father and uncle came here for the transportation business. Although he became famous as a footballer, he was a good cricketer too. He represented the Indian School team with Sunil Gavaskar, Eknath Solkar, and Amarnath brothers and even played two Tests. Solkar offered him to play in the Kanga league.

The man who represented the country in Pre-Olympics and Santosh trophy is now confined to bed. He cannot even walk on his feet nor can he speak. On any query, he can only look with a blank eye trying to say something. His elder son Indrajit told in an exclusive interview with Parallel Sports, “My father represented FCI in cricket and also worked as a coach in football before he took VRS in 2003 following his first cardiac attack.”

He lamented saying, "Despite the fact my father meets all criteria representing state and country, has not yet been awarded the Banga Bibhusan. Manas Bhattacharjee, Bidesh Bose, and Samaresh Chowdhury tried a lot for him, but still, nothing matured. He added, "Money is not the main factor but we expected some honor for this man who served his Country and State,” said his younger son Saranjit.

After 1976 Mohon Singh became so frustrated that he threw away all his mementos. His Wife Surjit and two sons somehow managed to preserve a few. Elder son Indrajit told Parallel Sports, “After the second cardiac attack my father was admitted at the SSKM hospital and the State Government bore all the expenses. East Bengal, however, facilitated my father on the occasion of their 100 years celebration.”

State sports minister Arup Biswas arranged for speech therapy but could not be done as his health did not permit him to take the strain. Wife Surjit Kaur changed her name from Soma after her marriage to Mohan Singh in 1977, said, “We have lost all our ancestral property in Punjab, the family business also has no existence. The only property we have now is the house which we have got through a gift deed”. Mohon Singh cannot come out of his house now and has lost his ability to think of the past also. His wife, two sons, and one daughter-in-law take care of the helpless man.
