'Playing against foreigners benefited us, now the perfect time to play without them: Ranjan Bhattacharya

Under his tutelage, George Telegraph won Kolkata Premier League Division (B) earning 40 points.

Ranjan Bhattacharya is one of the most successful coaches in recent times. Under his coaching Bengal became runner-up in the senior national football championship, Santosh Trophy in 2019-20. Under his tutelage, George Telegraph won Kolkata Premier League Division (B) earning 40 points.

Ranjan Bhattacharya has joined Premier Division team Southern Samity for this season. He is a coach of different philosophies and he always tries to introduce a new bunch of potential footballers who prosper in the future. Going by the habits he has already explored and recruited a few very promising footballers from the remotest places of Bengal along with a few who have experience playing in the I-League in recent times.

Kolkata Premier League is going to take place without the participation of foreign footballers this year for the first time, after more than four decades. Bhattacharya claimed to say, "In the early 80s when Kolkata football saw Majid, Jamshid, Khabaji followed by Chima Okorie, Christopher, Chibuzor it was required for the local footballers like us. We were scared of facing them on the pitch psychologically. I can say from my own experience that while playing against Mohun Bagan in a Kolkata League match my former teammate in Rajasthan Swapan Saha Roy was advising me not to tackle Chima if I could receive any injury. It was reality. But playing against those physically strong foreign footballers for almost the last 40 years, local footballers are not scared. So, it is the perfect time to play without foreign footballers. Once again Bengal football can get quality strikers like Sishir Ghosh, Dipendu Biswas, Asim Biswas."

When asked whether the absence of foreign players can be fulfilled by any potential local footballers this season, Bhattacharya sounded highly optimistic. He said, "I am mentioning a couple of names like Asit Hembram, Krishna Hembram, Biswajit Murmu. They are strong and perfectly built. They have power, speed, and thrust. I believe they will hog the limelight and attract the spectators with their impressive show."
