Prodigious Nilabjaa in dire distress, seeks permanent financial help

Nilabjaa Ghosh won silver and bronze in Khelo India swimming. But she said she might be forced to quit the game due to an acute financial crisis

Nilabjaa Ghosh is a new prodigy in Bengal swimming. She drew the attention of the swimming fraternity by winning silver in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly and a bronze medal in the medley relay event in recently-held Khelo India Youth Games. Already before the success Nilabjaa earned numerous accomplishments in the state and national-level competitions.

Nilabjaa, a resident of Konnagar started her journey under the guidance of former national swimmer Surajit Ganguly. Speaking to Parallel Sports, Nilabjaa described, "I was learning swimming at Konnagar club where my potential was first discovered by Surajit Ganguly who wanted to teach me. However, my father suggested me to train at a bigger club in Bali, Howrah. Afterward, coach Surajit had to quit for personal reasons and I shifted to Bangalore to train under coach Nihar Ameen Sir. Since then, I never had to look back."

Still, Nilabjaa has been going through a severe financial crisis. Even she gave hints she may be forced to quit swimming if she does not get any job or any regular financial assistance. Her father is a driver at Kolkata Police and he has already made several efforts for his daughter's state government job. But according to the 17-year-old swimmer, all efforts have gone in vain so far. Nilabjaa revealed," I am currently being coached by Dronacharya Nihar Ameen sir in Bangalore. His monthly tuition fee is Rs 13,000. Then it costs nearly Rs 9000 for nutritious food. My expenditure in total goes to nearly Rs 40,000 and my father has to bear that expenditure thrice to four times a year. Father has already taken a huge amount of loans. If I do not get any permanent financial assistance then I may be compelled to quit swimming as it is gradually going to be unbearable for my father to continue with the expenditure."
