Defeat against Sri Lanka and New Zealand has raised questions about Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tactics. 

According to PTI, Gambhir was given few privileges in the situation that the previous coaches did not have. 

“Gautam Gambhir was given access which his predecessors Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid didn't have. The BCCI's rule book doesn't allow coaches to be a part of the selection committee meetings, but for the Australia tour selection meeting, an exception was made.”

"The head coach was allowed to attend considering the magnitude of the tour," a senior BCCI source stated PTI.

After only three months of appointment as the head coach, India has faced few shameful defeats. Needless to say, the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) will be crucial for India for their WTC as well as Gambhir.  

While few new cricket stars were named in the BGT squad list—the KKR star Harshit Rana and SRH all-rounder Nitish Reddy, with the assertion of the head coach. Uncertainty regarding the senior players like Virat, Rohit, Ashwin, and Jadeja is growing like wildfire. 

Rumours suggest that spectators may not see many senior players in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Following the BGT, at least two veteran players are expected to announce their plans regarding future participation in test matches.

Captain Rohit Sharma recently stated about his plan in a press conference, “Our entire focus is now centred on the Australia series. For the moment, I don’t want to think about anything beyond this series.” 

After the Australia series, there may be formal or informal discussions regarding senior players. It is expected that the selection committee, particularly Ajit Agarkar and coach Gautam Gambhir, will formulate future plans concerning the senior players.
