R Ashwin had a heartfelt meeting with D. Gukesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ashwin, who has returned to play for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a nine-year absence since 2015, was thrilled to meet Gukesh, the youngest world chess champion.

Ashwin greeted Gukesh with a handshake and presented him with a CSK jersey bearing 'Gukesh' on the back. The two then played a game of chess, after which Ashwin signed the chessboard. The 18-year-old Gukesh was ecstatic after the interaction with the legendary Indian off-spinner.

The official social media of CSK uploaded the video with the caption, “World champion of chess! A Chennai paiyan at heart! A sparring with Ashwin! Introducing Chennai Superstars! Get set to meet Gukesh and his love for the city! 

Ashwin has taken 180 wickets in the IPL from 212 matches at an economy rate of 7.12. In addition to playing for CSK, Ashwin has also represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals.

It remains to be seen whether Ashwin will be included in CSK’s line-up when the team, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, plays their opening match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, 23rd March at Chepauk.
