Raman Vijayan in a mission to surpass Tata Football Academy with his school

Since he said goodbye to his playing career at Mohammedan Sporting in 2005-06, former India international Raman Vijayan wanted to build up an institution to teach football to budding talents. He wanted to pay back the football that had given him everything. He first earned A-license and then often used to visit Tata Football Academy to make an assessment of how a proper football school should be.

After the research work for around the next four-five years, the former striker started exploring talents. He went to his village. There he organized a selection camp. Around 400 boys attended and Raman finally spotted 50 promising young boys.

Raman speaking over the phone from Chennai said, "But I was in a dilemma that coaching the boys only will not help them to develop ultimately. So I thought of involving the school that will provide ground and other infrastructure. Simultaneously, I obtained help from a couple of my friends, a government officer as well as a businessman. I am thankful to them. I could not have fulfilled my plans if these people as well as the school authority had not stood beside that time.”

Raman finally built up his Noble Football residential academy in 2009 at Sriperumbudur. Noble Academy has been constructed in association with St. Margaret School where 80 elite boys (from 13 to 20 years) are being given a full scholarship and they are training under the guidance of 10 licensed coaches. Incidentally, the country’s mainstream football has already observed 15 to 20 footballers from this Noble Football Academy. Sivashakthi Narayanan, the new star in the ISL who has been representing Bengaluru FC is a student of Noble Football Academy. Raman revealed, “15-20 footballers from our academy have already represented the clubs of ISL and I-League. Noble Football Academy has also been extended through non-residential coaching centers in four more places near Chennai and these centers have been named Raman Vijayan Soccer School.”

One of the interesting parts of Raman's academy is that according to the academy rules, elite footballers who are getting professional contracts have to pay 10% of their monthly salary to the academy.

The 50-year-old former striker also divulged that he has plans to make an association with world’s one of the renowned football academies in near future and he wants to select an academy from England, France, or Germany.
