Raunak says Steve and Nabab’s phone calls helped him to return to football after five months

United SC rode Tarak Hembram and Sbham Rana’s own goal to win the match and garnered 10 points from its nine matches so far.

Raunak Ghosh is the nephew of former renowned India international goalkeeper Pratap Ghosh. The reflection was Raunak’s switchover to football from cricket. Raunak used to play cricket seriously, representing South 24 Pargana at the sub-junior level.

Raunak’s father Subrata Ghosh was also a footballer and participated in Santosh Trophy. Arindam Ghosh, the former footballer is also his relative. In a football-dominated environment Raunak’s transformation from an all-rounder to a custodian, influenced by Pratap Ghosh and inspired by his father Raunak became normal.

But the 27-year-old goalkeeper fractured his hand just before his team, United SC’s second division I-League campaign in March this year. The goalkeeper stood under the bars in his team’s ninth CFL Premier Division match against Army Red at Konnagar on Thursday after a gap of five months.

Although Tarak Hembram was chosen man-of-the-match on the day in the 2-0 victory of United SC, Raunak had also an impressive show as he foiled Army attacks to save his side from conceding goals on a couple of occasions.

When asked about his nightmarish five months Raunak asserted, “Our coach Steve Herbots and club’s director Nabab Bhattacharya used to call me almost every day during the phase. They cheered me, motivated me, and gave me the belief that I must come back. It will be unforgettable. Additionally, my parents were there, encouraged me and Pratap Ghosh also boost me a lot.”

In a bid to increase concentration Raunak concentrated on drawing during this phase. He said, "It is like playing against a tough team. One mistake will change the complexion of the game. Similarly, one mistake in the drawing will damage the whole picture."

M.S Dhoni is an idol and Raunak is eager to take advice from Subrata Paul, his hero in Indian football. He added, “I often watch the movie of M.S Dhoni. I get inspired a lot by Dhoni’s movement on the field and the style of leading the team. His calmness is immaculate and that is to be adopted.”
