Since India’s loss in the ODI World Cup final, Samson has scored 556 runs in 14 innings across ODIs and T20Is at an average of 46.33.
A day after the Indian cricket team for the Champions' Trophy was announced, details of differences between the coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have been exposed by a leading daily Dainik Jagaran.
A report by the newspaper has claimed that the team’s coach Gautam Gambhir wanted Sanju Samson in the squad instead of Rishabh Pant for the Champions Trophy. The national coach was already vocal about Samson's inclusion in the Indian side in the past before he took over the charge of the Indian team.
However, according to reports from Dainik Jagaran, the captain and the coach backed Pant to don the gloves instead. Gambhir had reportedly thrown his weight behind Samson, citing that he was the only Indian cricketer to smash three centuries in the previous T20 International calendar year.
“Head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted the only cricketer to score three international hundreds in T20Is in the previous calendar year – Sanju Samson – to be the wicketkeeper but the captain and chief selector backed Rishabh Pant. KL Rahul will be another keeper,” the report read.
Since India’s loss in the ODI World Cup final, Samson has scored 556 runs in 14 innings across ODIs and T20Is at an average of 46.33. He also had four centuries with three of them coming in T20Is. Pant, on the other hand, Pant scored 905 runs in 30 innings across formats at an average of 33.51.
