Rohit, Gill, and Jaiswal fail poorly; Jadeja is the only star on the first day of the Ranji Trophy

A 10th standard student, aged 15 years Ankit Chatterjee made his Ranji debut for Bengal on the day against Haryana, breaking Sourav Ganguly’s record. Ganguly made his debut in the Ranji Trophy at the age of 17 years.

The Ranji Trophy has regained the focus of the Indian cricket fraternity after a long time as the Indian superstars were seen participating in the elite competition of domestic cricket.

But on the first day of the sixth round of the competition, the stars failed miserably except Ravindra Jadeja, who rattled Delhi’s batting lineup with a sensational fifer in Rajkot.

Meanwhile, another talent marked his name on the big stage as Gujarat spinner Siddharth Desai set a brilliant bowling figure of 9/36.

This apart, a 10th standard student, aged 15 years Ankit Chatterjee made his Ranji debut for Bengal on the day against Haryana, breaking Sourav Ganguly’s record. Ganguly made his debut in the Ranji Trophy at the age of 17 years.

Bengal bundled Haryana for 157 runs in their first innings on the first day at Bengal Cricket Academy, Kalyani.

However, India captain Rohit Sharma’s return to domestic cricket was not memorable at all. Playing for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Rohit was dismissed for a mere 3 runs. His wicket came in a particularly underwhelming fashion, with a leading edge caught by J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off.

On a green-top track in Mumbai, Rohit looked all at sea. He failed to inspire any confidence and his dismissal was something that we saw during the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

Paired with Rohit for the first time in Mumbai’s line-up, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut was equally disappointing as well. The young opener was pinned in front of the wicket by J&K’s right-arm pacer Auqib Nabi, managing just 4 runs before his dismissal. The fresh wicket played into the bowler’s hands, making life difficult for the batters. Meanwhile, Punjab captain, Shubman Gill suffered an even more dramatic collapse.

Among the stars faltering, Ravindra Jadeja reminded everyone why he remains India’s most versatile player. In a stunning performance for Saurashtra against Delhi, the 36-year-old claimed a five-wicket haul that was nothing short of magical. In stark contrast to his batting compatriots, Ravindra Jadeja delivered a master-class with the ball. The 36-year-old veteran claimed a five-wicket haul that showcased his enduring class and importance to Indian cricket.
