While Bumrah is a strong contender for the role, the BCCI and selectors are cautious about his appointment due to his recurring injury concerns, which have heavily impacted his career. His workload management remains a priority, leading the selectors to consider alternative candidates for vice-captaincy to support Bumrah if he is given the captaincy.

The management has also made it clear that it prefers having a single captain for both Tests and ODIs. Suryakumar Yadav’s name was briefly considered for the ODI captaincy, but his current absence from the 50-over setup has ruled him out of contention.
