Rohit Sharma's fate as captain may be decided after Champions Trophy

Under Rohit’s captaincy, India’s setbacks- the board now appears determined to appoint a leader who can guide the team into the next WTC cycle successfully.

Rohit Sharma’s tenure as India’s ODI captain is under scrutiny, with the BCCI set to deliberate on his future post the ICC Champions Trophy. Regardless of the tournament’s outcome, the board aims to chart a clear path for leadership succession. However, Virat Kohli’s situation is different, as team management is willing to give him more time.

Rohit’s recent poor form has raised significant concerns for both him and the team. Despite his clear desire to continue playing, his age coupled with inconsistent performances has cast doubt on his long-term role. Reports suggest that if his performance does not see a marked improvement, India could soon witness a new captain steering both the ODI and Test teams.

As reported by The Times of India, a BCCI source revealed details of the discussions, “The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy. The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition.”

Under Rohit’s captaincy, India’s setbacks—such as the loss in the New Zealand Test series and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat—resulted in missing out on the chance to qualify for the WTC Finals. The board now appears determined to appoint a leader who can guide the team into the next WTC cycle successfully.

Age also remains a significant factor in this debate. While Rohit is likely to be 40 by the 2027 World Cup, casting doubts on his ability to feature in the tournament, Kohli, at 36, is still considered to have time on his side despite his recent dip in form. With the Champions Trophy approaching, both players have the opportunity to prove their worth in the upcoming IND vs ENG ODI series.
