Sanathoi Devi, the four-time silver-medallist in the World Championship and Arjuna awardee is the lady who fostered Roshibina since her childhood.
She has already hogged the limelight on Thursday morning with the silver medal in the Asian Games, improving her bronze medal in the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018.
This was the second silver medal in the Asian Games achieved by a Wushu player from Manipur. Roshibina Devi is now undoubtedly the 'talk of the town’ across Manipur even though the state has been jeopardized due to the ethnic violence between the two communities, Cookie and Meitei for the last five months.
Roshibina Devi's guide and mentor, Manipur's legendary Wushu player Sanathoi Debi while speaking over the phone from SAI, Imphal revealed, “The players of all the communities including Cookies and Meitei celebrated Roshibina's silver at our SAI. We do not care about the communities. We are sportspersons. Everybody is the same.”
"The players of different disciplines and communities including Cookies and Meitei, for whose battle the state has been stunned for the last five months, practice at SAI. But here at our SAI they train together, stay together, and they also celebrated Roshibina's achievement together. I believe sports will ultimately bring peace to the state."
Sanathoi also divulged that even, the Cookie players of other sports disciplines, training at the SAI were feared and wanted to go back home. After their parents were called up at SAI the coaches helped those players to go back home.
Sanathoi Devi, the four-time silver-medallist in the World Championship and Arjuna awardee is the lady who fostered Roshibina since her childhood. Roshibina was also influenced and inspired by Sanathoi Devi’s performance and started training the game under the tutelage of Sanathoi Devi’s husband and noted Wushu coach Maibam Prem Kumar Singh. Roshibina Debi was 11 years old.
Sanathoi was remembering the struggling days of the 22-year-old new-born Wushu star. "She hails from a very poor family. Her father was a farmer. He struggled a lot to accumulate the expenses of Roshibina's training. Even he sold out his small piece of land to accumulate Roshibina’s expenses for training, especially for joining camps before the crucial tournaments.”
After Roshibina started training under Prem Kumar Singh, Sanathoi also started nurturing her. She asserted, "I nurtured her like a mother, like an elder sister since her young age. I used to bear most of her training expenses. Even I brought her to my home and she stayed there for a long time.
Today I am so happy with her success. I believe Roshibina’s success will increase the popularity of Wushu, not only in the state but also across the country.”
The 31-year-old Sanathoi is now waiting for some lucrative cash prize for Roshibina. Sanathoi hopes Manipur will surely give some cash incentive after the situation becomes normal again. Roshibina is yet to get a job.
