Sayani has received only Rs 3 lakh from the state government so far.
She is on a mission of accomplishing a rare achievement. That is completing 'Ocean Sevens', a marathon swimming challenge comprising seven extremely difficult open water channel swims. It was designed in 2008 with the purpose of creating the same status as 'Seven Summits' mountaineering in swimming. Oceans Sevens include the North Channel, Cook Strait, the Molokai Channel, the English Channel, the Catalina Channel, the Tsugaru Strait, and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Sayani Das has already completed three of the seven oceans. Those are the English Channel, the Catalina Channel which covers 32 kilometers between Santa Catalina Islands and Los Angeles, and Molokai Channel in Hawaii Island which covers 48 kilometers between Molokai and Oahu Islands.
In a bid to achieve the rate feat of Oceans Sevens in her kitty, Sayani needs to complete four more channel swims. They are the Cook Strait, the North Channel, the Tsagaru Strait in Japan, and the Strait of Gibraltar. Sayani has recently received permission from New Zealand Open Water Swimming Association to swim in Cook Strait next year. It covers 26 kilometers between New Zealand's north and south islands. Sayani is planning to get into the water between January and March next year. She has also planned to complete the 34-kilometer North Channel between Ireland and Scotland in the same next year.
Speaking on the issue, Sayani who is studying Masters's degree in Anthropology from IGNOU said, "Among these two, North Island Channel seems quite tougher mainly due to its chilled weather. The sea temperature goes down below 10 degree Celsius. Besides, there are so many other obstructions like sharks and violent jellyfish. The undercurrent in the sea will also be a major hurdle to cross. Crossing 48 kilometers in Molokai Channel was extremely difficult. North Island is also going to be the same I feel."
Sayani lamented for lack of proper financial support from the government sector or even the ruling body of the country's swimming as well as the state. She said, "My father had mortgaged our original house in Kalna to carry on my expenses on the previous occasions. I received only Rs 3 lakh from the state government after completing the English Channel although my expenditure reached nearly Rs 13 lakh. Still, I have been able to sustain and continue trying to cross the next channels after English Channels thanks to a few well-wishers like Surajit Bakshi, and Sushil Mishra who have heartily come forward with financial assistance every time."
Sayani who has somehow been compelled to join a corporate house recently to reduce her financial deficiency to some extent is now preparing herself by practicing in the Bidhan Nagar Sports Academy pool as well as in Bhagirathi River in Kalna. She expressed gratitude commenting, "I am thankful to California-based renowned US long-distance swimming coach Dan Simmonelli who has been providing online training for me after I completed Catalina Channel. I met him before crossing Catalina Channel. He was my observer. Following his advice only I took up the challenge of completing Oceans Sevens."
Sayani however revealed she is highly inspired by Maharashtra long-distance swimmer Prabhat Koli, the 23-year-old long-distance swimmer who achieved the rare feat of completing 'Oceans Sevens' as the youngest long-distance swimmer from the list of nearly 30 so far.
Sayani is dreaming of adding her name to the list, especially in India where only two long distance swimmers, Prabhat Koli and Rohan More, the first from Asia have this extraordinary achievement before her so far.
