Umapathy revealed that in the last 28 years of SCSTEDS journey, the organization has produced more than 10 footballers who have donned India shirts at the youth level as well as representing different I-League and ISL teams.
The full form of SCSTEDS is Slum Children Sports Talent Education and Development Society. It is situated in a place at North of Chennai, named Vyasarpadi, one of the country's biggest slum areas.
Most of the residents, nearly 50 thousand have a common battle against the utmost financial distress and as a reflection, their children start their lives being child labours and school drop-outs. Umapathy, once the goalkeeper of Tamil Nadu and an Income Tax employee on sports quota tried to become ‘different’ from others.
Having motivated his friend Thangaraj, also a former footballer Umapathy took a noble initiative for the development of the slum through football. They gathered nearly 150 local people and started leveling a pond at Kalyanapuram in Vyasarpadi to build up a football ground. It took almost two years to construct the ground.
There was no place to play football in Vyasarpadi. Every day those local lads brought construction debris dumped on roadsides at night. The debris was ferried on bullock carts whose owners also showed kindness to support their cause. Once the pond was levelled, those young lads, led by the two men often used to keep night vigils to protect it from miscreants.

Then finally, their passion for football and their relentless hard work created the first football ground in Vyasarpadi. From debris to a beautiful football ground, Slum Children STEDS's first prominent gift to Indian football is Nandhakumar Sekar, the prolific wing-half who has been representing East Bengal and also donned India shirts.
Umapathy, speaking over the phone from Vyasarpadi revealed that in the last 28 years of SCSTEDS journey, the organization has produced more than 10 footballers who have donned India shirts at the youth level as well as representing different I-League and ISL teams. Slum SCSTEDS has presently nearly 500 students.
Umapathy revealed, “We focus mainly on child labours and the school drop-outs. Among 500 students most are child labours and school drop-outs. We noticed they look more willing to play football than studying. So we bring them in our project to train, but later send them to government schools to study. The students are provided everything, from food, football gear, and other facilities every month."
The Slum Children STEDS has now six licensed coaches and their tireless hard-work has recently earned an Astro-turf from the corporation as well as a dressing room. Umapathy also revealed that they are in search of getting opportunity to associate with any premier football academy or club where their boys can improve their standards.

"After our boys took part in the Gothia Cup in 2010 we realized the requirement of modern infrastructure and training process. Chennaiyin FC gives us moral support. Recently, in their scouting program, four boys were selected. We want to produce more international footballers who will glorify the country,” added Umapathy.
According to the chief of the SCSTEDS running the coaching program costs nearly Rs. 1.5 lakh monthly. Umapathy disclosed, “Nanadha is still with us with the same affection and love for the boys. Even he wants to contribute to our project. But I prevented him saying that let him flourish in the mainstream of Indian football and then we can take his contribution."
