'Severe plus' AQI and Angelo Mathews stole the limelight in Bangladesh victory

Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by 3 wickets

Amidst the biggest concern of this game, which is New Delhi’s 'severe plus', Air Quality Index (AQI), Sri Lanka faced a bizzare loss against Bangladesh by three wickets.

The AQI near the venue is close to 400 which lead to a number of players to stay away from practice sessions. However, BCCI and ICC have taken some mitigating actions such as, Independent consultation with a pulmonologist, implementation of water sprinklers around the premises, installation of air purifiers in the dressing rooms and match officials areas, which helped the conditions to improve.

Alongside that the cricket world witnessed a rarest bizzare situation as Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews scripted an unwanted record at the ongoing World Cup group match in New Delhi on Monday. He became the first ever batter to be timed out in the history of international cricket.

Mathews wasn’t ready to face his first ball within the stipulated two minutes as the strap of his helmet broke. While he waited for a replacement, Shakib filed an appeal, and Mathews was given out.

"We have certain protocols and the TV umpire monitors the two minutes,” fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock told the media during the innings break. "He will then relay the message through to the on-field umpires and in the instance this afternoon, the batter wasn’t ready to receive the ball within those two minutes even before the strap (broke),” he added.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir tweeted: “Absolutely pathetic what happened in Delhi today!” Meanwhile, Australian batter Usman Khawaja questioned how could Mathews’ be given ‘timed out’ when his helmet strap broke while he was at the crease. "Angelo made his crease then his helmet strap broke. How is that timed out? I’m all for timed out if he doesn’t make his crease but this is ridic (ridiculous). No different then a batsman getting to the crease then taking 3 minutes to face up,” he wrote on ‘X’.
