Shakib faces ban for illegal action of bowling

Despite the bowling ban, Shakib remains eligible to play as a batter in all formats at both domestic and international levels.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling. The ban applies to all domestic and international matches. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced this on Sunday, 15th December. The suspension follows a prior ban by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The ECB cited an illegal bowling action as the reason. The BCB confirmed the suspension was automatic under ICC rules. Shakib will soon undergo testing at an ICC-accredited center. He aims to correct his bowling action and lift the suspension.

Shakib’s suspension follows his failure in an ICC-accredited assessment earlier this month at Loughborough University, UK, after a suspect bowling action was reported during a September English county match. Under ICC rules, a domestic suspension by any national board automatically extends to international matches and ICC-affiliated leagues, with immediate enforcement and no additional formalities.

"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that national team allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket," the BCB statement said.

"Should the results of this [reassessment] analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket and in domestic cricket competitions under the jurisdiction of all national cricket federations.”

Despite the bowling ban, Shakib remains eligible to play as a batter in all formats at both domestic and international levels.

The suspension marks another setback in a challenging year for the Bangladeshi star. His international career has already been uncertain due to his role as a member of Parliament in the recently dissolved Awami League government. Having effectively retired from Test and T20I cricket, his request for a farewell Test in Dhaka was denied amid ongoing political turmoil.

Currently an active ODI player, Shakib was left out of Bangladesh’s recent series against Afghanistan and the West Indies. Meanwhile, he has been playing in the Lanka T10 league for the Galle Marvels but refrained from bowling in their last two matches, including Sunday’s game.
