Shilton Paul will say ‘goodbye’ to professional football today on Friday at Barrackpore Stadium after completing his last match for ASOS Rainbow against George Telegraph in the ongoing CFL Premier Division.
Once hailed as 'Flying eagle of Maidan' the 36-year-old custodian has all important feathers in his cap. He was the captain of the I-League-winning Mohun Bagan in 2015.
He was one of the key members of ISL-3 winning Athletico De Kolkata under Jose Francisco Molina. He played for all age group Indian teams.
He only did not get the opportunity to represent India at the senior level. "I do not have regret specifically for that. I have accepted it sportingly," commented Shilton while speaking on Friday morning.
Shilton does not want to become a professional coach like most of the former footballers including the goalkeepers from Bengal. He sounded firm in his explanation behind the reason. “Nowadays coaches obtain jobs on the basis of influence, especially in Bengal. A coach who has a strong influence over the club officials, will easily get teams for coaching. His merit and experience do not become eligible. And if I talk about the ISL, Indian coaches exist there to assist the foreign coaches,” Shilton stated.
Still, the goalkeeper has decided not to keep him completely away from football. "ASOS Group is building up an academy at Rajarhat. Being associated with the project I can work as an adviser there in the future.”
When asked about the most memorable part of his football journey, Shilton replied, “Playing 14 years for Mohun Bagan and delivering my best was the most memorable part of my career.”
