Shreyas Iyer Creates History as Punjab Kings’ Captain

In the IPL’s history, only two players have captained three franchises before Iyer—Mahela Jayawardene and Steve Smith.

Star batter Shreyas Iyer has created history by being named the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for IPL 2025, making him the first Indian player to lead three different IPL franchises.

Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024. Punjab Kings (PBKS) signed him for ₹26.75 crore in the November auction. This was a record-breaking amount, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history.

Before KKR, Iyer captained Delhi Capitals. He guided them to the finals in 2020. He is the only IPL captain to take two different teams to the final.

In the IPL’s history, only two players have captained three franchises before Iyer—Mahela Jayawardene, who led Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and Delhi Capitals, and Steve Smith, who captained Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals.

Sharing his thoughts, Iyer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead PBKS: “I am honoured that the team has placed its trust in me. Working again with coach Ponting is exciting. The team has a strong mix of talent and experience, and I aim to deliver our maiden title.”

Iyer's leadership credentials received a significant boost in 2024 when he not only led KKR to an IPL win but also guided Mumbai to their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. He was a key player in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy and Irani Trophy victories, further cementing his reputation as a dependable leader and performer.

With Iyer at the helm, Punjab Kings look forward to a promising campaign in the 2025 season, chasing their elusive maiden IPL title.
